In 2023, Voorheesville Central School District introduced the BIRDS motto, which stands for Be Inclusive, Responsible, Determined, and Strong. The motto grew out of work started by the District Advisory Committee. Staff, students, and parents worked together to reflect on district beliefs and create guidance that matched the community’s values.
Students continue to show what it means every day. From showing kindness and caring for shared materials to pushing through challenges and supporting classmates, K-12 students have individual ways they are inspired by the motto.
“Responsibility would be when you get homework, you make sure you do it and turn it in on time,” said middle school student Margaret Mae. “If you borrow something, you’ll return it.” “Don’t break the books,” said Sasha, an elementary student.
“Determination means persisting and being strong even when things are hard,” said Leanah, a middle school student.
“Voorheesville is strong because, even when things are down, people don’t give up,” said middle school student Andrew.
Cassidy, who is in high school, said the staff and students accept you for who you are.
“I’ve just seen it really take off,” said high school student Peter. “The students really try to live up to the motto.”
