On Thursday, Oct. 9, soil contaminated with used oil was discovered during the work to dismantle the former transportation facility adjacent to Voorheesville Elementary School. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) was immediately contacted about this issue by our project’s construction manager.
It has been determined that the contamination was due to leakage from a mechanical part that was buried beneath the concrete slab at the former transportation facility. The part was discovered during demolition. The oil contamination is contained in a small area and does not pose a threat to our school or students.
Our construction team has begun working with guidance from the DEC and a soil spill specialist to mitigate this contamination.
As always, the health and safety of our students, staff and school district community are a high priority for us.
