Message from the Voorheesville Central School District regarding cyber-fraud incident

The Voorheesville Central School District was made aware on Oct. 8 that it was the victim of a cyber-fraud incident resulting in the unauthorized transfer of approximately $1,000,000 from the district’s Capital Construction Fund.

Since that time, the district has been working closely with the New York State Police, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Secret Service, as well as with the district’s insurance carrier. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

We have been informed that approximately $750,000 of the funds have been successfully recovered to date, and efforts continue to recover the remaining amount. In the event that full recovery is not possible, the district will seek reimbursement through its existing cyber insurance coverage to mitigate any financial impact.

The district extends its sincere appreciation to the law enforcement agencies for their immediate response, diligence and expertise in helping to recover funds and pursue those responsible. Their partnership and professionalism have been instrumental throughout this investigation.

The district is also conducting a thorough review of its internal procedures and protocols to further strengthen safeguards against the increasingly sophisticated threats posed by cybercrime.

VCSD Board of Education and district administration remain committed to transparency and to maintaining the community’s trust as we work diligently to resolve this matter.
