National Manufacturing Day

On October 25th, the Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) and Principles of Engineering (POE) classes took part in the National Manufacturing Day field trip to RPI in Troy; RPI is the oldest engineering school in the United States. The students were able to hear from graduates of RPI who are now working in the field of Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering.  There were presenters from Regeneron and Sikorsky. Sikorsky flew a Blackhawk Helicopter in for the students to see land, get in and ask questions about. After the speaker portion of the day, the students were given tours of the Engineering and Manufacturing labs to see exactly how "college works". Students were able to see that RPI uses machines like we do (3D printers, CNC machines and laser cutters). Students also saw other labs such as a nanotech lab that is currently being used to research, design and create artificial 3D printed organs for the human body.   While on the field trip, students made connections with some college students and engineers that are in the workforce. A few students were able to exchange contact information with some of the engineers from Regeneron and Sikorsky. This was a great experience for these high school students and they made the most of it!
